Council prepared for wet weather system
Ahead of this weekend's wet weather system, Lockyer Valley Regional Council is urging its residents to remember if it's flooded, forget it.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) is forecasting rainfall of between 150 to 200mm from early Saturday afternoon to Sunday morning.
The weather system will impact the Lockyer Valley.
Council's Mayor Tanya Milligan said the heavy rainfall would be accompanied by strong winds.
The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting rainfall totals of up to 200mm over southern parts of South East Queensland, potential thunderstorms and winds of up to 100km per hour.
At this stage, the wind direction is expected to be east-west, which will have an impact on the Lockyer Valley, she said.
An Initial Flood Watch was issued by the Bureau of Meteorology late yesterday.
Cr Milligan said Council was closely monitoring the system from its Disaster Co-ordination Centre, and would continue to do so over the course of the weekend.
This Flood Watch means that people living or working along rivers and creeks should monitor the latest weather forecasts and warnings and be ready to move to higher ground should flooding develop.
River level rises above the minor flood level are expected and heavy rainfall may lead to localised flash flooding, however I can assure residents our Disaster Management Team will remain on top of the situation at all times.
The best way for residents to stay up-to-date is through social media, Cr Milligan said.
It is anticipated the system will clear to the east by Sunday morning.
