Vandals unwelcome at Laidley Sports Complex
Laidley is taking a stand against senseless vandalism following a series of attacks.
Laidley Sports Complex Recreation Committee President, Dan Flanagan said the consistent vandalism of the Laidley Sports Complex was frustrating and costly.
The problem is we have certain groups of people who have no regard for other people's property.
Council and clubs have put a lot of money and time into this area, through grants and funds and then a certain few come along and think they're getting back at these organisations, when really they're only hurting the ratepayers.
The ratepayers are the ones putting the funds into repair it, Mr Flanagan said.
A water fountain, which was set to be installed at the Laidley Skate Park and was jointly funded by private donation and Council, had its foundation destroyed the night after pipes and concrete were inserted.
The damage was repaired immediately and then vandalised again the same night. In the end, a different location was chosen so that the water fountain could be closer to CCTV cameras.
However, vandalism at the Sports Complex is not a new occurrence, with property consistently damaged even after repairs are made.
The lights and switches are continually damaged. I just replaced the lights about six weeks ago and they were wiped off the wall straight away, Mr Flanagan said.
We have also received complaints about dogs at the park not being on leashes and free to roam and leave droppings on the field. There are stations around the facility where people can pick up bags.
The vandalism is wasting thousands of dollars and people's time.
The Laidley Sports Complex is very well-maintained and we are trying to keep it that way. There are so many visitors from out of town that see it and say it's fantastic to have something like this so close to the centre of town.
We are proud of our facility and desperately want this senseless vandalism to stop so we can preserve and make the most of our region's assets, going forward.
Anyone who witnesses vandalism occurring is encouraged to contact Police.
