Regional Council writes history through new waste curriculum
A small regional Council is keeping the momentum going in their bold commitment to shaping the future of their region – embedding sustainability programs in local schools’ curriculum.
Schools and childcare facilities across the Lockyer Valley now have access to a fun and exciting environmental education program that meets education frameworks and curriculum goals as the Council works to reinforce positive waste and environment behaviour at the grass roots.
Partnering with popular program ‘dirtgirlworld’ as seen on ABC Kids to sponsor a ‘Get Grubby’ Program, Lockyer Valley Regional Council will play a vital role in helping local students celebrate nature through fun and exciting educational assets.
Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor, Tanya Milligan said she’s excited for their region to be part of an initiative that will help shape the future of both the region, and nation.
“As a region we’re proud to be leading the charge in the fight against waste, and this is yet another way we can ensure the Lockyer Valley remains a great region to live, work and play for many generations to come,” Mayor Milligan said.
“Providing curriculum that focuses on behaviour change and meets education frameworks in local schools will have meaningful and tangible impacts within our community.
“It’s about changing the lens – we’re switching from an awareness focus to behaviour change.
“We want to build habit, and leverage on existing habits and these educational resources are the perfect way to cultivate genuine change.
“Knowing about recycling and the environment is one thing, being given the tools and knowledge to tackle change and the way we handle waste in our homes is another.
“If we want change, we need to make changes – not just have an awareness.”
Swapping screen time for green time, and cleverly linking education with a familiar cartoon, Lockyer Valley Regional Council is confident the program will help families to break down their barriers to sustainability and explore the big world outside.
“We know dirtgirl, scrapboy and Costa the Garden Gnome are already a familiar part of many families’ lives, and this program extends on the familiarity to drive change.
“Children are a key part of the future of our region, and by integrating fun and innovative waste and environmental education into schools they have the ability to change waste behaviours within their own households,” Mayor Milligan said.
