For Our Elders
This week is NAIDOC Week and if you see Lockyer Valley Regional Council staff sporting Indigenous-inspired clothing, it’s all part of our acknowledgement of the history, culture and achievements of our First Nations people.
Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor, Cr Tanya Milligan said the week was an opportunity to pay our respects to and acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of our region.
“As an organisation, we pay our respects to the Yuggera and Ugarapul people, and to their elders past and present - not just during NAIDOC Week, but every day.
“We recognise the culture and vast achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people all across not only the Lockyer Valley, but Australia too.
“The theme of this year’s NAIDOC Week is ‘For Our Elders’, which reflects on the significant roles Indigenous Elders have played and continue to play in their communities,” Mayor Milligan said.
The Gatton Child Care Centre are also ensuring the important message is instilled in our younger generation, with a raft of activities planned throughout the week.
Youngsters will share picture books about Australia's Indigenous animals and people, participate in a yarning circle and learn about Indigenous music and visual arts.
