Bushfire preparedness vital over winter
Lockyer Valley Regional Council is encouraging residents to prepare for the upcoming bushfire season now.
Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor, Cr Tanya Milligan said while the Lockyer Valley was prone to bushfires, there were steps residents could take to support their family’s safety.
“Under pressure, it is easy to make bad decisions, however, ensuring you have a bushfire survival plan means you’ll make the right decisions and get out alive.
“It’s important to remember, bushfires can impact anyone, anywhere in Queensland.
“You are likely to be at a heightened risk of bushfires if you live within a few kilometres of bushland; your local area has a bushfire history; or you have trees and shrubs within 20 metres of your house.
“Our Council is encouraging landholders to take action now to manage fuel loads and reduce fire risks.
“This can be achieved by slashing or mowing paddocks, strategic grazing and maintaining fire breaks.
“Residents can reduce the risks to their home by clearing gutters of leaves and debris, knowing how to turn off your home’s mains power and gas supply and practicing your evacuation plan.
“Everyone should be familiar with the official Bushfire Warnings levels and have completed an Emergency Plan.
“Lastly, practice your evacuation plan with the family every three months - it will make sure everyone remembers where they’re meant to be, and who to contact,” Mayor Milligan said.
