Council listens following community consultation
Lockyer Valley Regional Council has revised its flood-damaged infrastructure project at several parks across the region, including Grantham, Mulgowie and Laidley following community consultation held earlier this year.
Council’s Infrastructure Portfolio Councillor, Janice Holstein said Council deemed the revision necessary to balance sustainability objectives with community feedback.
“Given that a major revision of, and decision on the planned works has been resolved, we’re now looking forward to informing the community on the revised plan and how their feedback has influenced the final decision.
“Several of our parks, including Anzac Park, Bugler Park, McGarva Park in Grantham, Lions Park in Lower Tenthill and the parklands adjacent to the southern section of Narda Lagoon are highly vulnerable to flood waters and sustain repeated damage to their infrastructure.
“It’s not a cost-effective asset management approach for Council to keep putting items back in harm’s way, however we acknowledge that some items previously listed for potential removal generally needed cleaning rather than repair.
“Finding the balance point between adequate and accessible recreational facilities and managing the financial implications for our ratepaying community is a challenge and thanks to feedback from the community, we believe we have found that balance,” she said.
Councillor Holstein encouraged the community to visit Council’s Engagement Hub to get all the facts rather than falling victim to any misinformation.
“While we acknowledge there were items on the list earlier this year that didn’t need to be there, the changes we’ve made are a direct result of community feedback and demonstrate this is a Council that values community input,” Cr Holstein said.
