Council’s Community Fire Awareness evening well attended
Lockyer Valley Regional Council’s Community Fire Awareness evening was well attended, with a strong number of attendees coming along to for an evening focused on knowing your risks and being prepared for this year’s bushfire season.
Council partnered with the Rural Fire Service to put the spotlight on the importance of fire awareness at Tuesday’s community event.
Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor, Cr Tanya Milligan said the majority of those present were from the Laidley area, particularly Buhse’s Hill.
“We also welcomed emergency service personnel and enjoyed an engaging presentation from Andrew Rose, the Area Director of West Moreton Area Rural Fire Service who spoke around the need to prepare and the potential impacts of various levels of vegetation on fire.
“One of the things Andrew highlighted was the speed at which fires can travel and that if we’re not well prepared in advance we’re likely to have limited safe choices once the fire is heading our way.
“Bushfire season is underway and after experiencing a warmer than average winter, we need residents to be aware of potential bushfire risks, know their responsibilities and the capacity of our local agencies.
“Those who attended left with a better understanding of the mitigation strategies and preparedness activities that can be the difference between life or death.
"It was great to have involvement too from Queensland Police Service, Queensland Ambulance Service, Queensland Fire and Rescue and our own Disaster Management Team, demonstrating how committed services are to helping residents be prepared for the season ahead.
“We also extend our thanks to the Laidley RSL for providing the community barbeque held prior to the event,” Mayor Milligan said.
This event was a joint initiative of Lockyer Valley Regional Council and Rural Fire Service with the support of Get Ready Queensland.
