Save the koalas this September!
It’s Save the Koala Month and Lockyer Valley Regional Council has joined forces to put these much-loved, furry animals front of mind.
Council, together with The State Government Department of Environment and Science (DES), other SEQ Councils and Social Marketing @ Griffith hopes to increase community engagement and better protect koalas.
Earlier this year, Council partnered with Social Marketing @ Griffith to host a successful Koala Forum, which improved communication and collaboration between researchers, koala carers, community groups and policy makers.
Lockyer Valley Regional Council Environment Portfolio Councillor Michael Hagan said September was peak koala-breeding season.
“From August to October, koalas are at their most active and often crossing roads and making their way into people’s backyards, with many local sightings from Hatton Vale to Postmans Ridge.
“This often makes them vulnerable to vehicle strikes and dog attacks, but there are a range of easy steps we can all take to help keep koalas safe this breeding season.
“This includes slowing down when you see a koala road sign; keeping your dog on a leash when out and about and inside overnight (where possible) and being alert for koalas and other wildlife crossing roads.
“Council officers will also be on-hand at the Laidley Spring Festival on Saturday 9 September and Bee Happy Day at Forest Hill on Sunday 10 September, where you can learn more about koala conservation.
“Those visiting the Gatton Customer Service Centre will find a special koala display on 11 September, while the Gatton Library will host an “Are you Koalafied?” Event on 22 September.
“With koala populations already in steep decline from habitat loss and disease, these little guys need all the support they can get,” Cr Hagan said.
