Cyclone clean-up continues across the region
The clean-up of Laidley following ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred continues to be team effort, with Council crews completing their second bulk flood-waste footpath sweep.
To get the process underway, Council welcomed the assistance of 60 Australian Defence Force personnel, who arrived last Monday night to lend their assistance in making the massive operation easier.
Lockyer Valley Regional Council Deputy Mayor, Cr Chris Wilson said the personnel were invaluable.
“The mammoth clean-up is well underway in our affected CBDs.
“ADF personnel were deployed to Laidley for a day last week and were on hand to help with door knocking and welfare checks.
“Their presence certainly went a long way towards helping to lift the spirits of our tired community.
“The SES and firies were also fantastic and assisted with hose outs of shops and affected houses, which was invaluable.
“ADF crews commented they were able to get through far more than originally anticipated, and we extend our sincere thanks to everyone for their help when it was needed most,” he said.
Meanwhile, Council crews took to the streets late last week and again on Tuesday, where they started their day in Patrick Street, Laidley.
“The main street was cleared, and crews continued to the surrounding streets and IGA car park, where the majority of what had been presented was sorted.
“Locals also took to the streets armed with brooms and pressure washers to clean away the debris left by floodwater.
"As a Council, we're both proud and grateful to be a part of a community that has banded together once again and supported each other so freely.
“The support of contracted crews from Hughes Gavel and Ability Enterprises provided important assistance when it came to separating fridges, white goods and E-waste,” he said.
Cr Wilson said that for a lot of local flood-impacted businesses, it’s back to business are usual.
“A lot of our businesses in Laidley are already back open, with some even opening the very next day.
“We’re urging our locals and keen visitors to get out and about to support those local businesses, as every little bit really does help,” he said.
