On-site Sewerage Facilities
On-site sewerage facilities are used for the treatment of domestic sewage on premises in unsewered areas. By definition, this includes:
- treatment plants
- grey water treatment facilities
- septic installations and
- composting toilets
On-site sewerage facility installations and replacements require a plumbing and drainage permit.
Permits/Applications
To make an application for a permit, a Qualified Wastewater Designer will be required to assess the type of on-site sewerage facility that best suits the property (Please note: Council does not offer this service). A report and design plan by the designer is required for submission.
Servicing
Most treatment plants require compulsory servicing every three months or as per the Chief Executive Approval. Owners have a legal responsibility to have the system serviced on time, in full, and any items rectified in a timely manner. Servicing must be carried out by qualified persons and the report forwarded to the owner and the Council within 10 business days from the date of the service.
Types
There are many types of on-site sewerage facilities to choose from. When investigating different types of approved systems (other than septic tanks), it is important to check that the on-site sewerage facility has been given a State Government Chief Executive Approval or its equivalent. If the on-site sewerage facility does not have an approval, it cannot be installed in Queensland.
