What is rural addressing?
Rural addressing is a simple, straight-forward means to identify, locate and address properties in rural areas.
Why is rural addressing needed?
The difficulty of addressing and locating properties has been accepted as a fact of rural life (For example: people giving ambulances directions such as turn right at the old gum tree, then turn right at the forty-four gallon drum are commonplace).
It is important that properties be numbered in a consistent and logical way to assist emergency services.
How does rural addressing work?
We assign each individual rural property a unique number based on the distance of the property entrance from the designated starting point of the road which is usually an intersection or junction.
The approach taken by Council is consistent with methodology described in the Australian Standard as the total distance is 2280 metres. Therefore, 2280 divided by ten is 228 and since the house is on the right hand side of the road the number stays as an even number 228.
We allocate a number every 10 metres along the road. The number is then a measure of the distance of the property entrance from the starting point of the road.
Odd numbers are given to properties on the left with even numbers being given to the properties on the right.
