The 28-year-old, born and bred in Ipswich, is a surgical nurse at the Ipswich Hospital by day and a competitive Olympic weightlifter by night. She competed at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in the 48kg division, where she lifted a personal best and placed seventh.
Alyce is passionate about sport and all things fitness. She loves a challenge, be it mental or physical, and enjoys helping others get out of their comfort zone. Her goal in life is to inspire the next generation to participate in sport and promote its benefits for mental and physical health.
"We are delighted to have Alyce join us for Australia Day and look forward to hearing about what makes her tick," Mayor Milligan said.
"I'm sure her love of fitness and how it contributes to mental and physical health will resonate with our community."
Afterwards, if you're planning on heading out and about, both the Laidley Pioneer Village and Museum and the Gatton & District Historical Society will host Australia Day celebrations. From 8am in Laidley you can embrace the true Aussie spirit with a barbecue breakfast, Aussie entertainment and activities for the youngsters. The Lockyer Antique Motor Association will have a great display of vintage cars, experienced blacksmiths will demonstrate their trade and to top it off, the Ipswich Small Engines group will have a wide variety of engines running on the day. Dig into the selection of home-made pies, including camel, kangaroo and the standard steak pie. With entertainment by local musicians Minnie Currie, Dave Parsons, John Hancock and Debbie Richards, it's sure to be a day to remember. Free entry with food and drink on sale. Donations welcome.
Activities at the Gatton & District Historical Society will run from 10am - 2pm and feature a display of vintage cars by the Lockyer Antique Motor Association, jumping castle and face painting, flag raising ceremony and the 2nd Light Horse Gatton Troop display. Local musician Lester Knopke will be there to entertain you and don't miss out on the great lunch on offer. Tuck into corned beef, local vegetables and white sauce, with fresh damper on the side for only $12.50.
