Community celebrates opening of new library

The Lockyer Valley community came together on Saturday to officially open its brand new, state-of-the-art library and customer service centre for Laidley.

Following a five-month construction period, strong crowds filed through the doors to check out the new features, including the sleek new design and colourful interior.

Council's Mayor Tanya Milligan said the project was a celebration of the future.

The new Laidley Library and Customer Service Centre is a modern and safe facility for the people of Laidley to enjoy.

This project was unique because library staff were both engaged with and listened to, and the community were also consulted to ensure the final result would meet the growing needs of the town.

In its past life, this building has been a place of social gatherings, the home of the School of Arts, and the Laidley Council Office, before becoming what it is today, Mayor Milligan said.

Assistant Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, Mr Glenn Butcher MP attended the opening and spoke highly of the new design.

It is wonderful to see a design that is modern and has exactly what the community needs.

To co-fund this facility with Council is exactly how we should be doing business here in Queensland.

Partnerships with local Council are critical to make sure communities thrive and survive, he said.

Community members enjoyed the long list of things to see, do and enjoy, including the jumping castle and face painting to wear out the youngsters and a sausage sizzle and coffee van.

The new facility is located in Spicer Street.

The project formed part of Council's 2016/17 Budget. Council contributed approximately $1.36M towards the development, while a grant of $264,000, under the Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program (LGGSP), further helped facilitate the project.
