Council marks Disability Action Week
Lockyer Valley Regional Council today hosted a morning tea to mark Disability Action Week.
The gathering was held for those with a disability who access services in the region.
Running from 11 - 17 September, Disability Action Week is held annually with the aim of empowering people with disability, raising awareness of disability issues and improving access and inclusion throughout the wider community.
With 1 in 5 Queenslanders having a disability, and disability touching the lives of most Queenslanders in some way, the week is an important celebration.
Council's Mayor Tanya Milligan is passionate about promoting the inclusion of people with a disability in the community and all levels of sport.
This year's theme is Inclusion: it's a game changer' and as a Council, that's the message we want to send.
To have today's celebration while the 2016 Paralympic Games are being held in Rio is extra special as inclusion is so vital, she said.
Mayor Milligan moved to congratulate Paralympian and Withcott local Claire Keefer, who took home a bronze medal in the Rio Paralympics in the Women's Shot Put F41 Final. Claire will also compete in the Women's Discus Throw - F41 Final on Friday morning.
On behalf of Council, and the Lockyer Valley community, I would like to congratulate Claire on her amazing achievements. Council and the entire community are extremely proud of what you have achieved, she said.
While today's morning tea was the first for Council, Mayor Milligan said the event would now become an annual celebration.
Personally today is an important day as I am passionate about recognising, empowering and integrating people with a disability within our community, as well as ensuring families receive the support they need.
Good health, mobility and independence should never be taken for granted.
It is vital for residents in the region to know they are supported by both Council and the wider community.
I pay tribute to the families of those who love, support and nurture within our community. And I wish to express my gratitude to those who allow me to call them 'friend', she said.
