Gatton CBD CCTV cameras to receive an upgrade

WORK is now underway on replacing the existing CCTV Network in the Gatton CBD.

The overhaul will see each existing PTZ (Patrol, Tilt and Zoom) Cameras replaced with four fixed cameras.

Council's Mayor Tanya Milligan said the Gatton CBD network was in need of the upgrade.

The current cameras are starting to fail which is resulting in cameras dropping out and not capturing footage for a period of time.

Ultimately, this is increasing operating and maintenance costs.

PTZ cameras are designed to patrol hot spots and work by moving around to capture footage. However, issues can arise when an incident occurs and the camera is facing the opposite direction.

Maintenance of fixed cameras is much more cost-effective as there are no mechanical/moving parts and because the cameras are fixed, the chance of incidents not being captured is greatly decreased, she said.

New Digital Video Recording software is also being implemented, which will improve the playback function and the ability to zoom in on recorded footage once it's captured.

Overall we hope the footage that's captured in the Gatton CBD will be able to assist the Queensland Police Service with anything they may need, Mayor Milligan said.

The improvements will also include a dedicated camera to cover the Centenary Gardens' pergola, following an increase in wilful vandalism.

The project will not have an impact on parking around the Gatton CBD.
