Hot topics at this year's Mayoral Speech Contest
Local students will showcase their speaking prowess at the annual Mayoral Speech Contest, to be held this month.
This year's topic, one that's sure to pose a great debate, is Add Water and It will Grow - Building our Region's Agriculture with Water Supply.
Seven year 11/12 students from Faith Lutheran College, Laidley State High School and Lockyer District High School will discuss the issue.
Council's Mayor Tanya Milligan said this year's chosen topic was fitting, considering Council's recent success at the Sydney Royal Easter Show and the region's esteemed title as one of the top ten most fertile farming areas in the world.
The Lockyer Valley is well regarded as a first-class farming area and generates fresh and full-flavoured fruit and vegetables and gourmet goodies.
I'm confident this topic will allow students to hone their skills in the art of public speaking, in particular their use of body language, voice modulation, pace and pause thanks to the skilful coordination of the Lockyer Valley Toastmasters, Cr Milligan said.
The event will be held on Sunday 15 May, from 2pm at the Lockyer Valley Cultural Centre.
Year 11 students will receive $250 for first, $150 for second and $100 for third and $200 for first, $100 for second and $50 for third for Year 12.
Trophies will be awarded to first, second and third places and all participants will receive a certificate of appreciation and a memento from Lockyer Valley Regional Council. The winner of the Year 11 competition will be awarded the Steve Jones Memorial Trophy.
A 12-month free membership to the Toastmasters Club will be awarded to the winning student of the Lockyer Valley contest, which can be used once the student reaches 18.
The competition is open to the public to attend and afternoon tea will be served to participants and invited guests.
The winner will go on to represent the Lockyer Valley in the Ipswich Mayoral Speech Contest on 29 May.
