How will you celebrate Australia Day
Australia Day isn't just a public holiday. Wherever you are, it's a chance to celebrate everything that's great about our country.
So, the question is - how will YOU celebrate Australia Day?
Here in the Lockyer Valley, the options are endless.
Both the Laidley Pioneer Village and Museum and the Gatton and District Historical Society will host Australia Day celebrations. Head on down from 8am to embrace the true Aussie spirit with a barbecue breakfast, Aussie entertainment, vintage cars and bush bands on offer.
The Australia Day Awards and Citizenship Ceremony will be held at the Lockyer Valley Cultural Centre at 9am. The ceremony welcomes new citizens and aims to pay tribute to individuals and groups who have made significant contributions to our local community or achieved exceptional results in sporting, environment or cultural endeavours.
Plus, with the chance to hear Lockyer Valley's Australia Day Ambassador, Li Cunxin speak, participation is a must! Li, who penned his remarkable story in the best-selling book Mao's Last Dancer will share his story. Mao's Last Dancer recounts Li's determination, perseverance, vision, courage and hard work, and in particular, the sacred family values and integrity that he learned in poverty-stricken China, which has driven him to become one of the best dancers in the world.
Council's Mayor Steve Jones said former Federal Member for Darling Downs, The Hon Tom McVeigh, would also be a special guest at this year's Australia Day ceremony.
Tom has played a pivotal role in ensuring the history of Gorman's Gap, which opened up the route from Moreton Bay to the Darling Downs, isn't forgotten.
Around seven kilometres long, the marked tree line' as it is known, was the first road in the area, used by Lieutenant Owen Gorman and in fact is now the only road to be gazetted as part of the National Estate.
Tom is one of the original Gorman's Gap Committee members, and I'm looking forward to hearing him discuss the significance of this to our region, Cr Jones said.
So, gather your zinc, pack a picnic, get the family together and come on down to help us celebrate those who add value to this great region.
