Landholders encouraged to keep an eye on stock

Lockyer Valley livestock owners are being encouraged to keep a close eye on their stock following several reported cases of dead sheep.

Both wild and domestic dogs, pigs and foxes can pose a threat to livestock, namely small stock such as sheep and goats.

Animal Management Portfolio Councillor and Deputy Mayor, Cr Jason Cook said it was a timely reminder for livestock and dog owners to monitor their property.

Given we live in a rural and small acreage area, small stock can be prone to attacks if properties are not monitored and fences regularly checked. Dog owners are also encouraged to check their properties are adequately fenced and their dogs are contained at all times.

The first signs of wild dogs are often livestock carcases, flightiness of livestock in response to disturbance, such as mustering with dogs, or injured and straggling livestock.

Installing field cameras on properties can cost less than $100 and is well worth the peace of mind.

Reporting any attack, incidents or wandering dogs in your area is encouraged, Cr Cook said.
