New flood portal coming for the Lockyer Valley

Lockyer Valley residents will soon be the first in the state to have immediate access to up-to-date detailed flood mapping information, all thanks to a State Government grant.

Following a funding injection from the Queensland Government, Council will soon implement a new Flood Information Portal.

Since 2011, Council has developed a sophisticated manual flood information system that has reached a point of industry recognition for reliability, however it is both resource intensive and time-consuming.

On average, Council receives 250 flood-based enquiries each year. The flood portal provides what flood information request applications do free for the public, and in minutes.

Lockyer Valley Mayor, Cr Tanya Milligan said the new information portal would offer a raft of benefits for the wider community.

This service will allow Council to consolidate the current processes to a sleek, automated, online system that provides up-to-date and detailed flood information on most properties in the Lockyer Valley Regional Council area.

The enhanced system will provide data at a user-selected location within a lot, which is ideal for larger rural and rural residential properties where flood impacts can vary widely within the lot.

It will also allow Council to fulfil planning obligations to the local community in the most efficient, cost-effective and appropriate manner, building community resilience and understanding in the longer term, she said.

Mayor Milligan said offering residents access to flood advice at their fingertips was invaluable.

Landowners and developers will be better able to understand flood constraints, and this will improve the quality and appropriateness of development proposals.

It will also align with the state land use planning system and will streamline the development assessment process by the applicant's ability to obtain flood data immediately, she said.

This free service is on track to be delivered to the community in August.
