Pledge to drive safely in the Lockyer Valley
Lockyer Valley Regional Council is urging motorists to participate in National Road Safety Week by taking the pledge to 'Drive So Others Survive'.
National Road Safety Week will occur from Sunday 15 November to Sunday 22 November after being postponed in May due to COVID-19.
Lockyer Valley Mayor, Councillor Tanya Milligan said it was important for all drivers to check and review their road behaviours, especially during National Road Safety Week.
"We know the Fatal Five messages include not drink driving, using seatbelts, not driving while distracted or tired and ensuring you are sticking to the speed limit," she said.
"National Road Safety Week just reinforces these messages by actively signing a pledge to confirm that you are committed to working with all road users to reduce the road toll."
Lockyer Valley Infrastructure Portfolio Councillor Janice Holstein said it was easy to take the National Road Safety Week pledge online.
"If you want to show your support publicly you can wear a yellow ribbon or display one on your vehicle," she said.
"Throughout the country, iconic buildings will also be lit in yellow to start conversations about the impacts of road trauma and to remember those we lost on the roads."
Each day of National Road Safety Week has a theme:
- Remember the 1200 - pause at 12pm to remember the 1200 people who died on the roads last year.
- Take the Pledge, Lead the Way - pledge to drive so that you and others survive.
- Safe Driving to Work - support your employees to drive so they and others survive.
- Move Over Slow Down - when you see emergency services' flashing lights move over and slow down to keep them safe.
- Protecting every life - drive safely to protect every life along the road including pedestrians.
- Shine a Light - turn your headlights on for road safety.
- Cyclists and Motorcyclists - share the roads and give them the space they need.
- Arrive home safe for your loved ones - it's greatest gift you can give.
