Media Release
Ahead of the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games Queen's Baton Relay (QBR) coming to Gatton in
March 2018, the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (GOLDOC) will hold a trial run
for the event on Saturday 2 December.
Council's Mayor Tanya Milligan said the trial run would mean both businesses and residents may be impacted.
Gatton is the only town between Toowoomba and Ipswich chosen to host a Queen's Baton Relay for the
2018 Commonwealth Games, which is an absolute honour and privilege.
It will bring with it a wonderful opportunity for both Gatton and the Lockyer Valley to celebrate and be
involved in an historic event, while also promoting the region, Mayor Milligan said.
Both the trial event and the actual Queen's Baton Relay will involve traffic and parking disruptions in Gatton along the route.
Businesses and residents on the QBR route will experience varying levels of traffic management,
ranging from temporary traffic control and partial road closures, through to full road closure in some sections.
There will also be parking restrictions in some areas.
The QBR route commences on Western Drive adjacent to Lockyer Valley Cultural Centre and continues along Lake Apex Drive, William Street, Cochrane Street, Railway Street, Crescent Street, William Street,
Spencer Street and into the Showgrounds.
Traffic management and delays will also occur at the Woodlands Road exit from the Showgrounds and at
the Golf Links Drive intersection on Spencer Street and Eastern Drive.
The general period of disruption is expected to be from 10.30am until 1pm with the exception of Railway Street which will close to all traffic and street parking from 7am until 1pm. Road closures, detours and traffic control at various intersections will be managed by a private traffic control company and the Queensland Police Service.
Councillor Michael Hagan said it was important to remember the QBR is not organised by Council, but
GOLDOC, who set dates, times and routes.
As a Council, our role is to manage the local traffic impacts and ensure our local businesses and residents are informed and can make necessary adjustments.
Due to the nature and size of this event we are unable to provide more specific times at this stage, however we hope this test run will enable to do so for the main event in March 2018.
We thank the community for their patience and understanding during this event, Cr Hagan said.
Council advises the IGA carpark will remain accessible from Crescent and North Streets, and Coles carpark will remain accessible from William and Spencer Streets.
Vehicle access to Gatton Hospital during the closure period will be restricted to emergency services and
urgent patient transfers and will be via Hill Street.
Pedestrian access will be available from William Street and Hill Street.
Vehicle access to medical centres along the QBR route may be restricted to emergency services and
customers with mobility restrictions are advised to adjust appointments around the closure period if at all
possible.
