Residents urged to remember Lockyer Valley farmers

As the prolonged drought takes its toll on farmers Australia-wide, Lockyer Valley Regional Council is well aware farmers in the region are continuing to battle the terrible effects of the big dry.

Lockyer Valley Mayor, Cr Tanya Milligan said community members who would like to donate to local farmers were encouraged to do so through Rural Aid Australia's Buy a Bale campaign.

Anyone can select the Queensland option and enter Lockyer Valley' when directed to ensure their support is focused right here in the Lockyer Valley.

But for this to be as effective as possible, we need local farmers to register confidentially as potential recipients at www.ruralaid.org.au/farmers/, which can also be done on behalf of a farmer in need.

This drought continues to have such a terrible impact on so many farmers, their families and of course has a flow-on effect to businesses in rural and regional economies.

This region knows only too well how to dig deep and support each other and I'm confident we will do just that for our farmers, Mayor Milligan said.

More than half of Queensland remains drought-stricken, with 23 local council areas currently drought-declared. This year's summer was the driest on record in Queensland since 1989-90.

Community members who want to direct their support to other drought-affected areas are encouraged to do so through the registered charity of their choice.
