Plant a tree and help your community

Residents of the Lockyer Valley are invited to attend a Community Tree Planting Day that's all about Keeping the Lockyer in the Lockyer.

Come along to the banks of the Lockyer Creek in Gatton this Sunday 24 March and lend a hand to plant some trees. Contractors engaged by Council will plant a total of 17,000 plants across two sites to help to stabilise the banks and ensure our precious soil stays in the Lockyer.

Environment Portfolio Councillor Rick Vela said the trees would assist the local environment in a number of ways.Planting trees helps to prevent sediment loss and minimise risks during major flood events, such as bank erosion and sediment movement downstream, creek location changes and damage to valuable assets and infrastructure.We all know the Lockyer Valley is one of the ten most fertile valleys in the world and renowned for being South East Queensland's salad bowl.It's important to reduce the very high risk of sediment movement from the Lockyer catchment that could threaten Brisbane's water supply and reduce the agricultural productivity of the region, Cr Vela said. Council has been allocated Catchment Investment Program (CIP) funding from the Resilient Rivers Taskforce to undertake the strategic revegetation project. A sausage sizzle and refreshments will be provided. Registration is essential for catering purposes and dietary requirements.
