Help is there if you need it
Following the recent flood event in the Lockyer Valley, Council is reminding residents that help is available if they need it.
Community Recovery Hubs, established by the Department of Communities, Housing and Digital Economy and other agencies, are now operational in both Gatton and Laidley.
Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor, Cr Tanya Milligan said the Hubs were designed to assist residents navigate the rollercoaster that is recovery.
“Community Hubs offer residents access to emotional support, financial assistance, housing support and information on clean-up and recovery, as well as referrals to non-government organisations and local services.
“Recovering from a natural disaster is a draining process, both financially and emotionally and I urge any residents requiring support to visit the Recovery Hubs while they are in town,” Mayor Milligan said.
Council also welcomed the recent announcement that personal hardship disaster assistance had been activated through the jointly funded Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangement.
The assistance will help cover the costs of immediate essential needs, such as food, temporary accommodation, clothing and medication.
These grants of up to $180 per person, to a maximum of $900 for a family of five or more, are available to those eligible who are still experiencing financial hardship because of the recent severe weather event.
“There are a range of additional grants available, such as the Essential Household Contents Grant, Structural Assistance Grant and Essential Services Safety and Reconnection Grant, which are income tested, also available to eligible residents who are uninsured and have experienced certain loss or damage following this disaster.
“Council’s Hardship Policy also offers assistance and options to property owners experiencing difficulties in paying council rates, charges and other related fees and charges due to financial hardship.
“I strongly encourage property owners who are experiencing hardship to make contact as soon as possible to discuss the range of options which may be available to them, and for community members to share information with their neighbours who may not have access to online messages,” Mayor Milligan said.
The Community Hubs are operational 9am – 5pm, seven days a week at the Gatton RSL Club, 52 Crescent Street, Gatton and the Laidley Sports Complex, Recreational Reserve, Whites Road, Laidley.
