Help is available for flood-impacted farmers
Lockyer Valley Regional Council is urging flood-impacted farmers who need assistance with the clean-up of flood debris following the recent weather event to register their interest now.
Council has asked Disaster Relief Australia (DRA) to support the region’s farming community to help clean-up following the floods, to allow them to get back on their feet and grow the food that feeds our nation.
Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor, Cr Tanya Milligan said DRA’s support may include collecting farm flood debris such as trickle tape and irrigation pipes, packing up or repairing damaged fences and clearing fallen trees.
“I am extremely concerned about the level of impact the region’s farmers have suffered due to repeated flooding over the past seven months.
“As one of the largest vegetable-producing regions in Queensland and Australia, it is vital we do what we can to get our farmers back on their feet and ensure a steady supply to supermarkets and family grocers.
“This support is available to all types of farmers – crops and livestock and I certainly encourage them to register their interest while the help is available.
“Support is available for everyone - big or small - so please seek assistance if you need it,” she said.
Mayor Milligan said Council was extremely grateful for the developing relationship with Disaster Relief Australia.
“Partnerships are the backbone of our Council and even more so in a disaster.
“DRA are a volunteer-based charity drawing on the know-how and labour of many ex-servicemen and women, including those from the defence force, fire services and other first-line responders and we are so thankful for the support they are offering to our farming community.
“Our farmers are resilient and keen to get production underway again and I’m sure this initiative will go a long way towards making that happen,” Mayor Milligan said.
Generally, farmers will need to provide the materials and DRA will provide the labour.
