Get rid of your green waste for free!
Did you know Lockyer Valley Regional Council accepts uncontaminated domestic green waste (up to 8x5 trailer load per day) free of charge at our transfer stations?
With the warmer weather on its way, a lot of us are taking the opportunity to clean up our properties after a long, cold winter.
Lockyer Valley Regional Council Deputy Mayor and Waste Portfolio Councillor, Jason Cook said while the temptation might be there to burn waste, such as wood materials and green waste, the smoke pollution can cause issues for our neighbours.
“It is common for burning off to result in smoke pollution, which can aggravate existing heart and lung problems, cause eye and throat irritations and headaches.
“Obviously, there is also the potential risk to safety if the fire gets out of control.
“Instead, we’re encouraging residents to dispose of their garden and excess waste at the closest Council Transfer Station, use any extra space in their red-lidded bin or try composting or reusing waste where possible.
“Disposal of domestic green waste is free for local residents, however if you still choose to burn off, please advise your neighbours and, importantly, check in with the weather conditions before you start a fire,” Cr Cook said.
Other important tips include:
- Avoid burning wet or green vegetation; chemicals and paints; cloth, foam or sanitary napkins as they release hazardous fumes.
- Ensure the fire has maximum air flow so there is less smoke.
- Ensure the fire burns quickly and is completely put out (so it doesn’t smoulder).
Council can investigate smoke emissions using the Environmental Protection Act 1994, and on-the-spot fines can apply for unlawful acts under this legislation.
Council also has a local law that limits the lighting of fires in the region, particularly in residential areas. Fires are only permitted when suitably enclosed to prevent the escape of cinders or ash.
