Lockrose Waste Facility to close
Lockyer Valley Regional Council has scheduled the permanent closure of the Lockrose Waste Facility, due to site and capacity constraints.
The closure was approved at Council’s August Council Meeting and will take effect from close of business on 1 October, 2022.
Lockyer Valley Regional Council Deputy Mayor and Waste Portfolio Councillor, Jason Cook said the closure was due to a range of factors.
“The site itself is currently situated in unformed road reserve and was never intended to be a long-term waste facility.
“Since February, there have been two major flood events impact the region that have resulted in the closure of this site, multiple times, as it is inaccessible when wet.
“The site is also inaccessible for heavy vehicles and offers no queuing space off the main road, which can pose a safety issue at times.
“The location offers limited storage and, as a result, limited recycling options too,” Cr Cook said.
Cr Cook said Lockyer Valley Regional Council provides seven other Transfer Stations across the region and 80 per cent residents who frequent this site have access to three of these Transfer Stations, all of which operate in a more cost-effective manner, within 20 minutes of the current site.
“We understand there will be some level of inconvenience to some residents, however rising waste management costs require Council to either operate in a more cost-effective manner or increase waste management fees and charges – which is always a last resort,” Cr Cook said.
The Lockrose Waste Facility, located at Village Road, Lockrose, is currently only operating 12 hours per week, including 9am – 1pm on a Thursday and 9am – 5pm Saturdays.
