Council receives green light for roadworks to begin

Lockyer Valley Regional Council has received the green light from the Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA) to commence thorough repairs on some of the region’s flood-damaged road network.

This welcome news will allow Council to implement a restoration process on those approved areas, rather than simply re-patching potholes thanks to jointly-funded Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.

Lockyer Valley Regional Council Infrastructure Portfolio Councillor, Janice Holstein said Council was relieved to receive the necessary approvals required to commence higher-quality repairs.

“We understand some residents are frustrated by the pace, level and resilience of repairs; however, it was vital we receive the necessary approvals prior to commencing works.

“Unfortunately, funding approval alone doesn’t solve all the delay issues as Council is not immune from the major challenges resulting from the ongoing rain, as well as the significant supply chain issues, as is happening across Australia.

“Some vital materials have at least a six-month delay and we’re looking at a wide range of suppliers to try and reduce that impact.

“We will continue to ensure the worst defects are prioritised, subject to the appropriate materials being available, as the overall safety of our community is paramount.

“We ask for the community’s patience and understanding as we attend to road safety and access issues in order of priority,” Cr Holstein said.

With Council staff and resources stretched to the limit, Council has also engaged contractors to clean out table drains across the region to reduce the impacts of likely La Nina rainfall on an already soaked catchment.
