Get Ready Lockyer Valley during ‘Get Ready Queensland Week’
Get Ready Queensland Week is officially underway, and Council is urging Lockyer Valley residents to prepare now for the upcoming severe weather season.
To mark the commencement of Get Ready Queensland Week, Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor, Cr Tanya Milligan said Council was leading by example to “Get Ready” too.
“We’ve recently completed maintenance on our flood monitoring cameras and will continue maintenance of our other flood monitoring infrastructure.
“In preparation for forecast wetter than normal conditions, this maintenance is vital to ensure the safety of our community,” she said.
Mayor Milligan said Get Ready Queensland Week was all about encouraging residents to prepare their household and community.
“Keeping a Household Emergency Plan is one of the most effective ways to ensure everyone knows where to go and what to do in an emergency.
“Get your family together and make a list of your most important contacts, such as doctors, utility and insurance providers and family and friends who live in other locations.
“Make arrangements with family and friends in case you need to evacuate or can’t get home and ensure everyone in the family knows the plan.
“Vital emergency supplies include essentials you'd need to last at least three days at home if you were isolated due to flooding, such as non-perishable food and water; a torch; battery powered radio and toiletries and the necessary equipment to cook food if you lose power.
“We’ve endured many natural disasters here in the Lockyer Valley, and preparation is key to making sure you’re on the front foot before the severe weather seasons begin,” Mayor Milligan said.
It’s important to stay up to date with local road conditions during a significant weather event, which is why Council is encouraging all residents to have the Disaster Dashboard in their toolkit.
“Given the highly saturated catchment, even small amounts of rainfall can result in water over the road, and everyone is urged to drive cautiously during and following rain,” Mayor Milligan said.
Council’s flood monitoring cameras can be accessed from Council’s Disaster Dashboard.
Residents are reminded that anyone with saved links to specific cameras will need to update them.
