Story Time and the Aussie Bird Count come together for special event
Lockyer Valley Libraries’ will host a special Story Time event next week, all to coincide with the Aussie Bird Count.
Little ones under five and their parents/carers are invited to come along to the Gatton Library on Tuesday 18 October for a special morning, where those in attendance will venture outside with an important task to undertake.
As Australia’s largest citizen science project, the Aussie Bird Count sees people across the country encouraged to head out to their front yards, backyards, courtyards, parks and play areas to count how many birds they see in 20 minutes
In 2020, 187 local observers looked to the skies, sighting 16,265 birds, including 170 different species – and we’re aiming to beat this record in 2022.
Lockyer Valley Regional Council Community Services Portfolio Councillor, Michael Hagan said children could participate in the special day at the Gatton Library.
“We can’t wait to head out and around Lake Apex looking for birds – who knows what we'll see?
“We’re encouraging our youngest residents to do their part for bird conservation by coming along to count the birds who are counting on us!
“Maybe you’ll spot one of the Lockyer Valley’s threatened species, such as migratory shorebirds, Australian Painted-snipe or the Glossy Black-Cockatoo.
“This is certainly a wonderful experience, so come along with your hat, water bottle and sunscreen and don’t miss your chance to participate,” Cr Hagan said.
