Australia Day celebrations across the Lockyer Valley
Australia Day is a time for all Australians to reflect, pay respect and celebrate and on Thursday, 26 January the Lockyer Valley will come together to celebrate members of our community who have gone above and beyond to help improve the lives of others in the region.
The Australia Day Awards and Citizenship Ceremony will be held at the Gatton Shire Hall at 9am and Lockyer Valley Mayor, Cr Tanya Milligan said the Awards ceremony was a highlight of the Australia Day program.
“The day aims to pay tribute to individuals and groups who have made significant contributions to our local community or achieved exceptional results in sporting, environment, or cultural endeavors and this year, we were thrilled to receive 21 nominations.
“We will also welcome our newest citizens to the region at the Citizenship Ceremony, which will follow on from the Awards.
“I offer my sincere congratulations to all nominees, who all made significant contributions to our community,” Mayor Milligan said.
The 2023 Australia Day Ambassador for the Lockyer Valley is Professor Peter Timms, who is saving our iconic koalas from extinction. He will join Mayor Tanya Milligan for an inspiring Q&A session and will be available to talk to attendees after the formalities.
“Following the formalities, we’re inviting everyone to join us for a morning of Australiana entertainment, activities, and food.
“We’re excited to have award-winning poet Marco Gliori join us, as well as live music by local bush band, String Beans, face painting, koala displays and catering by Native Oz Bushfoods.
“We are also pleased to welcome an Auslan Interpreter, and a Quiet Zone will be available for those needing a break from the sensory overload.
“This free, family-friendly event is a wonderful way to start the New Year and come together to celebrate those community members who do their best to make our region the wonderful place it is.
“We acknowledge high-achieving members in our community who have made outstanding contributions and have given freely of their time, knowledge and enthusiasm to promote the welfare and wellbeing across the Lockyer Valley community,” Mayor Milligan said.
This event is assisted by the Australian Government through the National Australia Day Council.
