Council endorses Saturday morning trial for Gatton Library

Lockyer Valley library lovers will soon be able to access the Gatton Library not five, but six days a week after Council endorsed a six-month trial to open on a Saturday morning.

Set to commence from 4 March, Councillors gave the tick of approval at the February Council Meeting for the Gatton Library to open on a Saturday morning, between the hours of 9am and 11.30am.

Lockyer Valley Regional Council Community Facilities Portfolio Councillor, Michael Hagan said providing residents access to a library service on Saturday mornings will help remove barriers for any library members who are unable to visit during business hours.

“Lockyer Valley Libraries ceased offering a Saturday library service during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, however a recent Library Customer Survey highlighted that 56 per cent of respondents were eager to see the library reopen on Saturday.

“Over the past three years, there have been many changes in our community and how people engage, access, and depend on services and this trial reflects how Council genuinely listens to the community and looks for ways to meet expectations within our budgets,” he said.

Providing this much-loved service to members unable to visit during business hours was important, Cr Hagan said.

“Trialling these additional hours at the Gatton Library will ensure this reflects the community’s current needs, and we are keen to see how our residents engage with the change,” he said.

On completion of the trial, consideration will be given the Laidley Library operating hours.
