Council commits to new Community Centre to service Lockyer Waters

Lockyer Valley Regional Council has earmarked more than $600,000 for the construction of a new Community Centre to service Lockyer Waters.

Once completed, the Lockyer Waters Community Centre is set to replace the aged Alex Geddes Hall.

Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor, Cr Tanya Milligan said Council had prepared a design based on feedback from community representatives.

“It was also important to take into consideration the needs of the community that were identified throughout the 2022 flood events, and we have done just that.

“Community consultation was a priority, and as such we made sure to discuss the centre’s designs at a recent community meeting.

“The community were supportive of the plans, and we will now commence the tender process,” she said.

Mayor Milligan said the funding, secured by Council from the Australian Government’s Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Grants Program (BSBR), would provide benefits for many generations to come.

“Community Halls are such important facilities for regional communities like ours, which is why Council has worked hard to secure this funding.

“It is vital our rural community halls are equipped to better support their local communities, both during disasters and for social events.

“Once complete, the Lockyer Waters Community Centre will ensure the community of Lockyer Waters and surrounds has an adequate facility to service their community for many years to come.

“We acknowledge the isolation that occurs in the Lockyer Waters area when disasters happen and have designed the new centre as a location where the community can meet and provide support to each other when needed,” Mayor Milligan said.

Given the supply challenges for building materials and contractors, the project is expected to be completed and open for community use in April 2024.
