Local school praises FOGO Waste Warrior Program
Lake Clarendon State School is singing the praises of Council’s Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) Waste Warrior project.
Teachers at the school have provided feedback to Council, saying they have noticed a tangible shift in the mindset of both children and parents when it comes to all things waste.
Lockyer Valley Regional Council Deputy Mayor and Portfolio Councillor for Waste, Cr Jason Cook said changes that are often the easiest can make the most impact.
“We all recall our lunch bag being full of cling wrap and disposable plastic bags, but the students at Lake Clarendon have really embraced bento box-style lunchboxes and other items to reduce packaging.
“Not only do they greatly minimise waste, but also allow the children access to a variety of fresh food options throughout their school day.
“Alternatively, separate smaller containers, dividers and liners are a great way to make use of what you already have at home,” he said.
Council was committed to championing long-term waste minimisation and behaviour change, Cr Cook said.
“The FOGO Waste Warrior Program is a perfect example of that, and it is wonderful to hear these school students are doing their part to make a difference in this important space,” he said.
“It really does cement the important role this Program plays in the education of our region’s young minds.
“It’s about changing their behaviours and setting the right example from the beginning,” Cr Cook said.
The FOGO Waste Warrior Program involves students separating their food waste from the general waste stream, freezing it, and giving to Council to process with the FOGO collection.
“The students are excited to see the fruits of their labour when their food waste comes back to the school as a soil conditioner to beautify the school grounds,” Cr Cook said.
