Heatwave conditions across the Lockyer Valley to continue
Severe heatwave conditions sweeping across the Lockyer Valley are set to continue throughout the weekend, according to the Bureau of Meteorology (Bureau).
Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor, Cr Tanya Milligan said the Bureau’s Severe Heatwave Warning posed a timely reminder for residents to stay alert during such conditions.
“This is an opportunity to not only look after yourself and your family, but your neighbours too.
“If you don’t know your neighbours, why not get to know them now and introduce yourself, or make a list of family, friends and neighbours you might want to check in on.
“We’re also encouraging residents to keep a close eye on those around them who are most at risk in these conditions, such as children, the elderly and people with a chronic condition or illness.
“Let’s also keep our pets safe by bringing them indoors or ensuring they have shelter and plenty of water.
“Other tips include closing your windows and blinds, curtains or awnings early in the day to keep the heat out, drinking plenty of water and staying out of the heat,” she said.
Mayor Milligan also urged residents to stay alert for bushfires throughout the Christmas period.
“Clean your gutters of leaves and debris, know how to turn off your home’s mains power, water and gas supply and try to have three days’ worth of food and bottled water on standby.
“Use the Christmas break to reduce the fuel load on your property by slashing or mowing paddocks, creating fire breaks or just clearing vegetation from around the home and other structures.
“Lastly, practice your evacuation plan with your family every three months - it will make sure everyone remembers where they’re meant to be, and who to contact,” she said.
