Councillor Chris Wilson has been voted in as Lockyer Valley Regional Council’s new Deputy Mayor following the 16 March local government elections.
Cr Wilson received the highest number of votes from his fellow Councillors at the first official post-election Council meeting this morning.
Councillor Michael Hagan was the only other Councillor to nominate for the role.
Cr Wilson, who joins re-elected Mayor Tanya Milligan in the leadership team, said he was excited to serve the community as Deputy Mayor for the next four years.
“I’m very humbled to have been elected by my peers and I look forward to stepping into this leadership role following my two terms as Councillor,” he said.
“As I have done in previous terms, a big focus of mine will be ensuring Council’s run of good financial management continues.”
Cr Wilson takes over from former Deputy Mayor Jason Cook, who, along with former Councillors Janice Holstein and Rick Vela, retired at the end of the last term.
During the meeting, Cr Wilson was also appointed as the Councillor representative on the COMSEQ Board, and Cr Hagan to Deputy Chair of the Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG).
Cr Hagan brings with him eight years’ of experience with Council chairing the Recovery Committee. Councillors Wilson and Hagan will support Mayor Milligan, who is the automatic primary COMSEQ delegate and LDMG Chair.
“It is fantastic to have Cr Wilson by my side – he possesses a great deal of experience, logic and financial acumen – which will continue to benefit this Council and the region as a whole,” Mayor Milligan said.
“I congratulate Cr Wilson and Cr Hagan on their respective appointments, and having worked closely with both of them over the years, I know they will fulfil their roles admirably and with the community at the forefront of their minds.”
The Electoral Commission of Queensland officially declared the new-look Council last week, which includes three returning Councillors, Mayor Milligan, Councillors Chris Wilson and Hagan, plus four fresh faces, Councillors David Neuendorf, Julie Reck, Cheryl Steinhardt and Anthony Wilson.
The newly-elected members were officially sworn in on Tuesday, with Councillor portfolios to be determined at a later date.
Ordinary Council Meetings will remain on the third Wednesday of each month commencing at 9am in Council Chambers, except for the April 2024 meeting, which will be held on 24 April.
