National Simultaneous Storytime

National Simultaneous Storytime will this year celebrate its 24th anniversary – and will once again be marked at Lockyer Valley Libraries, with the region’s youngsters invited to come along.

Every year, a picture book – written and illustrated by an Australian author – is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, homes, children’s facilities and early childhood education and care services all over the country.

This year, the Lockyer Valley is encouraged to come together for the reading of “Bowerbird Blues”, by Aura Parker.

The event, to be held at the Gatton Library on Wednesday 22 May, is an annual campaign by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) that encourages young children to read and enjoy books.

Lockyer Valley Regional Council Libraries and Galleries Portfolio Councillor Julie Reck said National Simultaneous Storytime is a joyful event – one full of colour and fun that also promotes the importance of reading and literacy.

“It is incredibly special to think that Australia-wide, everyone is coming together to share the exact same story.

“This year, we’re looking forward to seeing plenty of Lockyer Valley children come together again to read Bowerbird Blues by Aura Parker at the same time as everyone else around the country.

“This annual event reinforces the First 5 Forever program which encourages parents and caregivers to talk, read, sing and play with their child every day, while also placing a spotlight on the incredibly beneficial story time activities in our libraries,” Cr Reck said.

National Simultaneous Storytime will be held at the Gatton Library on Wednesday 22 May, 11.30am for 12pm start.
