Recipients announced for Council’s Environmental Grants Program
Lockyer Valley Regional Council has awarded grant funding to the recipients of the Community Environmental Grants Program for 2023/24.
The Community Environmental Grants Program aims to support a healthy, sustainable and integrated natural environment within the Lockyer Valley through cooperative community projects.
Council’s Environment Portfolio Councillor Cheryl Steinhardt said Council allocated a total of $14,543.00 to the following applicants:
- Friends of Gormans Gap Inc. - $5000 towards the Free the Trees project.
- Kokoda Youth Foundation Inc. - $5000 towards purchasing native trees, fruit trees, flowering shrubs, hedging grasses and groundcover.
- Withcott State School Parents and Citizens Association - $4543 towards garden and biodiversity upgrades.
The applications received were assessed on how well the proposed project achieves the Community Environmental Grant funding objectives, which are:
• Protection, maintenance and restoration of the natural environment supporting native fauna and flora;
• Education of the community about the importance of protecting, maintaining and restoring the natural environment;
• Flora and fauna survey work which assists in protecting and or restoring the environmental values of the Lockyer Valley regional area; and
• Promotion and implementation of catchment management such as the restoration of waterway vegetation communities.
“Once the new school term begins, I’m looking forward to visiting the Withcott State School, together with the Mayor and my fellow Councillors, to see first-hand the great work they are doing with the grant funding they received.
"As a Council, we are proud to have supported many worthwhile innovative and successful projects thanks to the Community Environmental Grants program.
"The funding provided through this initiative can really be a make or break for our community-based organisations.
"No one is more attuned to our local environments than our communities, and I am confident this funding will greatly assist in achieving their desired outcomes.
“Congratulations to all the deserving recipients,” Cr Steinhardt said.
