Getting Ready a priority for Lockyer Valley residents
The Lockyer Valley community came together on Sunday to put a spotlight on disaster preparedness at Council’s Get Ready Lockyer Day.
While Council prepares year-round for disaster and emergency events, Council’s Mayor and Chair of the Local Disaster Management Group, Cr Tanya Milligan said the event proved timely.
“Get Ready Day was all about getting the community together with a focus on emergency preparedness and resilience.
“It was great to see so many people meeting our local emergency response members and other agencies that support our community’s preparedness, response and recovery.
“We also used the opportunity to look at the impact of disasters on our youngest residents, with the kids in attendance taking home a Birdies Tree colouring tote bag and other books to help them and their families understand those ‘big emotions’ little people can have when affected by disaster events.
“They also had the opportunity to play the Get Ready Game to understand what is needed in an emergency kit.
“With more than 20 agencies represented, there was information for everyone, and it was great to offer the community a chance to talk to so many agencies in one place.
“Talking to our residents on Sunday, it was wonderful to hear such positive feedback from the community, with those in attendance enjoying the fun and interactive experience to learn about a very serious subject.
“When an emergency happens in our community, we all need to work together to protect life and property.
“As a Council, we are committed to providing residents with the tools and information they need to be prepared for any emergency, and we thank the agencies involved and everyone who came along,” Mayor Milligan said.
Council also utilised the event to premiere its new Ready Together video series, which featured residents who had experienced disasters first-hand. The ‘Big Map’ of the Lockyer Valley was also brought out for the first time and was a hit with locals, giving them an opportunity to discuss what hazards might impact them where they live, work and play.
Attendees had the opportunity to learn in a fun and interactive way, enjoying a range of giveaways and activities for the whole family. Those who took part in the Trail Competition won prizes to help their preparedness, from fuel vouchers and starter emergency kits to a generator.
