Lend a hand – plant a tree and be part of something bigger
We’re inviting you to lend a hand at the upcoming community tree planting day at Gatton Racecourse.
Designed to help restore habitat and improve erosion control along Lockyer Creek, Lockyer Valley Regional Council has partnered with Greening Australia, Resilient Rivers SEQ – an initiative of the Council of Mayors (SEQ), and the Lockyer Valley Turf Club to host the day.
Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor, Tanya Milligan said projects such as this were a key to improving the resilience of our creeks to face future floods.
“When rivers and creeks have the right type of trees along their banks, they slow the flow of flood waters and help reduce erosion, which is vital for our region and downstream into the Brisbane River,” she said.
Council’s Environment Portfolio Councillor Cheryl Steinhardt said everyone was welcome to attend the event, which coincides with World Rivers Day.
“We’re gearing up to plant more than 750 trees and shrubs, so I’m urging our green thumbs to come on down and get your hands dirty for a good cause.
“Planting trees not only benefits the environment by enhancing air quality, protecting soil and supporting wildlife, but it also strengthens community spirit and makes the Lockyer Valley a more attractive place to live.
“Getting involved in these sorts of events is a great way to get out, be active, meet new people and of course improve the natural habitat and biodiversity for native animals in the area.
“We encourage everybody to wear sun protection, gloves and closed-in shoes. Water and light refreshments will be provided.
“Green spaces and trees are vital to the wellbeing of our community, so I’m encouraging everyone to join us and lend a hand,” she said.
