Get Ready Queensland Week
Next week is Get Ready Queensland Week, and Lockyer Valley Regional Council is driving home the message to residents to prepare their families and property for possible natural disasters.
With the region’s weather landscape everchanging, residents are being encouraged to understand the importance of household preparedness.
Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor, Cr Tanya Milligan said while weather may not follow a plan, we certainly can.
“If there is one thing we know from experience, it is that being prepared can make a huge difference.
“The Lockyer Valley community knows only too well that disasters happen, and most households in the region will have already faced a few.
"We’re encouraging all households to ensure their emergency kit is well stocked, and to have a well-established evacuation plan.
“Whether you have lived in the Lockyer Valley your entire life, or just moved to the area, you need a plan for how you will respond. Where would you go if you couldn’t get home, how would you contact family members if separated?
“Right now, with everything dry, fire might be front of mind but that can flip quickly, and we can be faced with severe storms or flooding.
“Have a chat with your neighbours - not only are they a great source of information but also the ones most likely to help you in an emergency.
“Spend some extra time planning if you have animals, or special needs – these circumstances can be difficult to navigate, so plan now to reduce any stress.
“Lastly, ensure you have access to vital emergency supplies for at least three days, such as non-perishable food and water; a torch; battery powered radio; toiletries; and the necessary equipment to cook food if you lose power.
“It’s also important to stay up to date with local road conditions during a significant weather event, which is why Council is encouraging all residents to have the Disaster Dashboard in their preparedness toolkit, and to follow Council on Facebook,” Mayor Milligan said.
Council’s flood monitoring cameras, which provide a view of some creek and waterway conditions, can be accessed from Council’s Disaster Dashboard.
