Prepare now for bushfire season
Now is the time to prepare for bushfire season – that’s the message Lockyer Valley Regional Council is drumming home to residents.
Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor, Cr Tanya Milligan said it’s never too early to get your home ready.
“We’re certainly enjoying a milder start to spring, however that could change at any moment.
“When the dry and hot conditions hit, the window to prepare properties for bushfire season quickly decreases.
“Regardless of where you live, it is vital residents take preventative measures to prepare by clearing gutters and yards, removing overhanging branches and ensuring a Bushfire Survival Plan is in place.
“We encourage everyone to stay aware of the fire risks, follow expert advice and not leave preparations until the last minute. Basically, be as proactive as possible.
“It is all about identifying what you need to do to ensure your family and your property are as resilient as possible.
“Now is the time to ensure you have a Bushfire Survival Plan and that everyone in the house understands what you will do in the event of a bushfire.
“Power tools and machinery can spark dangerous fires, so if you are carrying out any work during heightened fire conditions, be aware of the dangers and carry a water supply and firefighting equipment.
“Everyone should be familiar with the official Bushfire Warnings levels and have completed an Emergency Plan,” she said.
Mayor Milligan said there were steps landholders could take now to ensure their fuel load was reduced.
“You can minimise fuel loading by slashing or mowing paddocks, grazing animals, creating fire breaks or just clearing vegetation from around the home and other structures,” she said.
