Council crews work to tackle fast-growing grass across the region
Council’s roadside mowing crews are working flat out to get on top of the fast-growing grass across more than 1500kms of roads we're responsible for.
Council’s Parks and Gardens Portfolio Councillor Anthony Wilson said the combination of rain and sunshine in recent weeks has resulted in rapid grass growth.
“Council really does appreciate your patience as we work hard to catch up with the demand as we cut this exceptionally fast-growing grass down to size.
“Council’s 18 maintenance zones are serviced by four tractor slashers and one contractor, in addition to 11 zero turn mowers and two wide area mowers that are concentrating on the parks and open spaces.
“Priority is given to the highest order roads first, which includes intersections for visibility clearing, followed by the lower order sealed roads and then unsealed roads. Warrego Highway intersections and median strips remain the responsibility of Transport and Main Roads,” he said.
Cr Wilson said the mowing frequency for most parks and fields during grass growing season was between two and three weeks, however during and following rain events those timeframes may be extended.
“Delays can occur after periods of rain when the ground is saturated and to drive on would cause damage to the surface.
“Our operators are instructed to minimise the impact of mowing equipment by assessing the conditions prior to mowing, which may result in delays to mowing the park.
“We understand the urgency to get to all areas and thank you for your patience as our crews work hard to manage this large task,” Cr Wilson said.
