Council urges community to prepare for flood season
Lockyer Valley Regional Council is closely monitoring seasonal forecasts to enhance its flood readiness.
Chair of the Local Disaster Management Group, Mayor Tanya Milligan emphasised the importance of community preparedness alongside Council's efforts.
"The Lockyer Valley is no stranger to natural disasters, yet each storm and flood season, we see individuals caught off guard or taking unnecessary risks," she said.
"It's crucial to understand the responsibilities of Council, emergency services, and each household.
“A common misconception is about sandbags. Council does not deploy sandbags for storms. Instead, residents should assess their vulnerability to overland run-off and plan accordingly.
“This may involve purchasing plastic sheeting, empty sandbags, and sand from local hardware stores, and storing them at home for quick setup. Council's website provides guidance on setting them up effectively.”
Council’s Principal of Disaster Management, John Holdcroft said Council continually reviews disaster management plans, preparations, responses, and recovery efforts, both routinely and after disaster events.
“Our teams and resources are ready for the summer wet season,” he said.
“During the Christmas period, Council ensures staff are on call to cover disaster operations 24/7 if needed.
"The plans we make before disaster strikes make all the difference during an event – and it's the same for every household and business.”
Mayor Milligan said key components of preparedness included having an emergency plan and performing basic home maintenance.
"An emergency plan that everyone in your household understands and discusses regularly can be lifesaving,” she said.
“Simple tasks like cleaning gutters and securing yard furniture ahead of storms can prevent damage and costly cleanups.
“While insurance can be expensive, consider if you can afford not to have it and ensure you have the right cover," Mayor Milligan added.
