Waste Levy Information
On 1 July 2019 the Queensland Government introduced a waste levy to encourage the reduction of waste generation and grow the resource recovery and recycling industry. The levy applies to 39 Local Governments located in the levy zone, which includes Lockyer Valley Regional Council (metro zone). The Queensland Government will provide annual payments to Council to ensure there is no direct impact on the household from this levy.
Why a waste levy?
The levy is part of a new strategy for Queensland to increase recycling and resource recovery and reduce waste to landfill.
How will the levy be applied?
The landfill levy will be applied to all major waste streams including Commercial and Industrial (C&I), Construction and Demolition (C&D), Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) and regulated waste disposed of to landfills within the levy zone. The annual payment received by Council from the Queensland Government will ensure there is no direct impact or cost for MSW (household waste) kerbside wheelie bin collections or self-haul household waste taken to Council waste facilities. The levy will not be applied to clean recyclable material suitable for resource recovery and recycled.
